This is a multi-tiered issue that includes equal access to government, transparency in financial contributions and work efficiency in our elected leaders. Campaign finance laws currently require that candidates spend a disproportionate amount of their time seeking out donors with the means to give in large amounts (and who in turn can cause others to give – known as bundling), all without a true mechanism for transparency as a means to prevent the trading of political favors. This problem is exacerbated by the recent Citizens’ United ruling, a Supreme Court decision which allows corporations and Super PACs to give unlimited amounts to candidates as “an expression of free speech.”
